Synopsis
The 32nd Austrian Congress in Linguistics in 2004 hosted a workshop entitled «Empirical Approaches to Discourse Analysis». This workshop aimed at bringing together proponents of different empirical approaches to discourse analysis and raising discussion among such diverse disciplines as Systemic Functional Linguistics, Rhetorical Structure Theory, Conversation Analysis, Social Pragmatics, Argumentation Theory, Critical Discourse Analysis, Multimodal Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics. The volume is the result of the fruitful discussion and the interdisciplinary work started in that workshop. In eight compact chapters the contributors outline how empirical methods developed within the frameworks of these disciplines can complement and enhance 21st century Discourse Analysis.
2004 fand im Rahmen der 32. Österreichischen Linguistentagung der Workshop «Empirieorientierte Ansätze in der Diskursanalyse im Vergleich» statt. Ziel des Workshops war es, Proponenten unterschiedlicher empirischer Ansätze einzuladen und eine Diskussion zwischen Wissenschaftlern aus solch unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie Funktionaler Linguistik, Rhetorical Structure Theorie, Konversationsanalyse, Sozialer Pragmatik, Argumentationstheorie, Multimodaler Diskursanalyse, Kritischer Diskursanalyse und Korpuslinguistik in Gang zu setzen. Der Band ist das Ergebnis dieser fruchtbaren Diskussion und der interdisziplinären Forschung, die in dem Workshop ihren Anfang nahm. In acht kompakten Kapiteln zeigen die Autoren innovative empirische Methoden für eine moderne Diskursanalyse auf.
About the Author
The Editors: Helmut Gruber studied linguistics and psychology at the University of Vienna, where he is currently associate professor in linguistics. Martin Kaltenbacher studied English and Classics in Salzburg and Oxford and holds a post-doc research position at the Department of English in Salzburg. Peter Muntigl studied linguistics in Vancouver and is assistant professor at the University of Salzburg and Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. All three share an interest in Systemic Functional Linguistics, Discourse Analysis and Applied Linguistics. In 2002 they co-founded (together with Eija Ventola) the Austrian Systemic Functional Linguistics Circle, which organises research panels and workshops on current linguistic topics throughout the country.
Die Herausgeber: Helmut Gruber studierte Linguistik und Psychologie in Wien und ist gegenwärtig Professor für Linguistik an der Universität Wien. Martin Kaltenbacher studierte Englisch und Klassische Philologie in Salzburg und Oxford und arbeitet als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Fachbereich Anglistik der Universität Salzburg. Peter Muntigl studierte Linguistik in Vancouver und ist Universitätsassistent an der Universität Salzburg sowie Adjunct Professor an der Simon Fräser University in Vancouver. Die drei vereint ihr Interesse für Funktionale Linguistik, Diskursanalyse und Angewandte Linguistik. Gemeinsam gründeten sie im Jahr 2002 (mit Eija Ventola) den Österreichischen Arbeitskreis für Funktionale Linguistik, der Tagungen und Workshops zu aktuellen linguistischen Themen in Österreich veranstaltet.
