Enabling High Data Rate Communication:: Detection in Multiple Antenna Systems

Advent of 2G saw a paradigm shift in the use of wireless technology. The desire for multimedia applications overshadowed the fundamental voice service but required higher data rates. Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication system promises efficient achievement of this requisite. Limited by Shannon bound, the data rates in single antenna systems are linearly related to the bandwidth. But employing multiple antennas allows capacity growth, linear in the number of antennas, without expansion in available bandwidth. This significant gain led MIMO into the candidate 4G standards; LTE and mobile WiMax. However, the simplified MIMO transmitted structure is coupled with a relatively complex receiver design. This book provides a comprehensive discussion on different multiple antenna configurations with focus centered on the state of art receiver designs.
