Vero Shaw had already given the Victorian fancy its great illustrated survey when he produced The Encyclopaedia of the Kennel in 1913. It is a working A to Z: the breeds interleaved with entries on physiology and feeding, blistering and vomiting, the stud, veterinary care, exhibition - and, unusually, the designing and construction of kennels themselves.
