Reviews
Beginning with a brief history of adoption as a concept and touching on key issues in past history and recent times, this book looks at the development of adoption and adoption law in the U.S. Updating a volume published in 1991, it includes entries that discuss not just adoption but also the related institutions of foster care, group homes, and orphanages. The lengthy introduction covers the historical elements of adoption as an introduction to the current implications and practice. Each entry covers both historical practice and current practice and law, and there is lengthy discussion of such current issues as Adop tion and Safe Families Act, Divorce of adoptive parents, Foster care , Perma nency planning, Termination of parental rights, and Transracial adoption . This new edition contains updated information on Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adoption and Romanian adoptions, among other topics. Entries conclude with short lists of citations for further information, and cross-references do a good job of moving the reader from one entry to those that are related. Statistical tables are used throughout the text to illustrate points, exemplify demographic trends, and clarify changes of social attitudes. Appendixes include "Birth Rates for Unmarried Women," "Total Adoption Filing Per Year in 29 States, 1988-1997," and "Foster Care Statistics and Tables," as well as directory information and lists of periodicals and other publications. There are no other encyclopedias available on adoption and only a few recent handbooks that might contain some of this information, including Adoption: A Reference Handbook (1998), The Adoption Option Complete Handbook, 2000-2001 (1999), and The Adoption Hand book (1998). The Encyclopedia of Adoption is recommended for public and academic libraries. REVWR
