This overview of American government is designed to assist everyone from middle-school age up in understanding how government and politics work at local, state, and national levels. It covers the structures, functions, and processes of government and related issues, such as economics and the military.
The 200 entries are alphabetically arranged, from accountability in government to women in politics. They range in length from 500 to 2,500 words and address the expected basic subjects, such as the Bill of Rights; contemporary topics that affect government (gay rights, gender politics); and many aspects of justice, including criminal procedure. Entries such as Civil War amendments and Watergate lend historical perspective, and those on political philosophy (citizenship, separation of powers) and on international politics give an even broader view. President Clinton's impeachment and trial occurred too late to make it into the article on impeachment.
Most of the articles are signed; the authors are identified by academic affiliation or are listed as "independent scholars" (except for one lawyer). The articles are enhanced by photos, maps, charts, and tables. Some essays are supplemented by sidebars. For example, the entry veto power contains two sidebars, one showing the meaning and derivation of the word veto and the other showing how some presidents exercised the power. Each article ends with a brief bibliography, and there is a 21-page general bibliography in volume four. Nearly all the bibliography items are from the 1990s.
The final volume includes the text of the Constitution and its amendments. There are also an extensive (20 pages) glossary and a list of the essay topics, arranged by category, which would make this set useful for teachers planning assigned readings. The index is comprehensive and indicates in boldface the topics that are addressed in full articles. This set will be a valuable addition to school and public libraries.
