Offers more than four hundred entries discussing the ideas, people, places, and events in the United States and western Europe during the years between the two world wars.
Reviews
This volume covers the years between the World Wars because the author sees 1919 as a turning point for the twentieth century. With the end of World War I and the beginning of the Weimar Republic, there were cultural phenomena (Algonquin round table, Harlem Renaissance, Radio), economic challenges (Dust bowl, Stock market crash), events (Court-packing controversy, Kritsallnacht, Sino-Japanese War), organizations (Civilian Conservation Corps, League of Nations), and individuals, from Charles Lindbergh to the Marx brothers, that influenced the period. More than 400 alphabetically arranged entries, including many on lesser-known people (e.g., Abbott, Edith, who helped establish the Social Security system; Zsigmondy, Richard Adolf, Austrian chemist and Nobel laureate) and events, give a good overview of the era. The emphasis is American, but there is a variety of world events and leaders, plus coverage of British and German elections. Most entries include two to four paragraphs of description with numerous book and periodical references. Some entries, such as Elections, United States and Olympic Games, are several pages in length. An extensive bibliography is found at the end of the volume. Also appended are Franklin Delano Roosevelt's first "Fireside Chat" and the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine, among other documents.Writing is generally clear, and there are many helpful cross-references. The index groups entries under some broad topics, such as literature and poetry, religious issues and leaders, and U.S. Supreme Court. Some topics that students might be searching for, such as the Rosewood, Florida, massacre (1923) and Orson Welles' War of the Worlds radio broadcast (1938), are absent from the text.Although not an essential purchase, this volume is unique and would be useful in larger high-school and public library collections.
