This volume contains the proceedings of a week-long conference hosted by the Center for Global Partnership in Yatsugatake in Nagano Prefecture in August 1993, marking the tenth anniversary of a 1983 Japan Foundation conference on the theme "What Was the Twentieth Century?" At the meeting a prestigious group of thirty-one scholars from the United States, Europe, Israel, and Japan sought to place the momentous events of this century in perspective, at the same time considering what trends and possibilities lie in store as humanity approaches the next. The conference offered a rare opportunity for distinct and informed voices from vastly different fields of academia to share knowledge and exchange perspectives.
