Eine erfolgreiche Behandlung sowohl von primären als auch von sekundären endodontischen Infektionen setzt eine wirksame Eradikation der verursachenden Mikroorganismen während der Wurzelkanalbehandlung voraus. Die Chancen auf ein günstiges Ergebnis der Wurzelkanalbehandlung sind deutlich höher, wenn die Infektion vor der Obturation des Wurzelkanalsystems wirksam beseitigt wird. Bestehen jedoch zum Zeitpunkt der Obturation Mikroorganismen oder dringen sie nach der Obturation in den Kanal ein, besteht ein hohes Risiko eines Behandlungsfehlers. Es heißt "Instrumente formen, Spülmittel reinigen". Jedes Wurzelkanalsystem hat Räume, die nicht mechanisch gereinigt werden können. Die Bakterien, die sich in Bereichen wie Isthmen, Verästelungen, Deltas, Unregelmäßigkeiten und Dentintubuli befinden, lassen sich mit mechanischen Mitteln allein nicht beseitigen. Die Verwendung von chemischen Desinfektionsmitteln wie Wurzelkanalspülungen und antimikrobiellen Medikamenten zwischen den Terminen zur Beseitigung dieser Bakterien und zur Desinfektion des Wurzelkanalsystems ist daher wichtig.
