Fredrick Oechsner was the Central European Manager for the United Press based in Berlin. When Germany declared war on the United States in December 1941, he and his press corps colleagues (including Joseph W. Grigg, Jack M. Fleischer, Glen M. Stadler, and Clinton B. Conger) were arrested and interned by the Nazi government for about six months. While locked up in the internment camp, the journalists pooled their notes and collective memory. Published by Little, Brown & Co. shortly after their release in late 1942, the book provides a raw, inside look at the inner workings of the Nazi war machine, the psychological state of Germany, profiles of high-ranking Nazi leaders, and the logistics of how the early blitzkrieg campaigns functioned.
