Engaging with Mathematics Through Picture Books: Rich Mathematical and Literary Experiences for Children: 1

Engaging with Maths through Picture Books is a springboard for educators to develop exciting literature-based mathematics lessons. Twenty books are featured in this early maths teaching resource with accompanying lesson plans. The ideas can be used as they are, adapted to the learners' needs and/or applied to different books.

The maths early years activities presented are designed to build sound foundations for children's future enjoyment and success with maths. Children think mathematically through creative experiences - creating their own math pictures or undertaking a shape hunt! This is not your average mathematics book. For educators, it is a form of professional learning. For children, it is a fun entry into maths and numeracy skills.

Dr Tracey Muir is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at the University of Tasmania. Her research interests include effective teaching of numeracy, student engagement, teacher knowledge and the use of children's literature to teach mathematics. She regularly conducts professional learning for teachers and has delivered workshops, presentations and keynote addresses at national and international conferences.
