Synopsis

As in the case of other design processes, to design a safe venue requires a very clear insight into the ways that crowds, and the individuals within them, behave. It requires the designer to understand far more than the engineering principles of crowd pressure and loadings, important though these may be. The designer must, for instance, also know how a crowd's behaviour can be controlled by their surroundings.
