Engineering Design: A Project-Based Introduction (2nd Edn)

Introduces conceptual design methods and project management tools through description, example, and case study. Two design projects are consistently drawn upon to illustrate the design methods and management tools. Also covers important topic of reporting the results of a design project and provides useful insights into team behaviors and dynamics.
* Enhanced coverage of communications and decision-making techniques.
* Introduces conceptual design tools like objectives trees, morphological charts, and requirement matrices.
* Covers project management tools, including work breakdown structures, Gantt charts, and project control tools.

With Clive Dym and Patrick Little’s project-based approach to engineering design, you’ll learn how to work effectively on teams and apply conceptual design methods and project management tools to client-initiated design projects while working effectively on a design team.

Throughout, the text consistently draws upon two design project to illustrate these methods and tools, and the types of work you’re likely to encounter in your future professional career. The book also details the means of reporting the results of a design project, provides useful insights into team behaviors and dynamics, and discusses ethics in engineering practice.

Now updated and revised, the Second Edition features a new introduction to the design process (including a short case study in Chapter 2), more material on documenting design, revised coverage of design decision making, and new coverage of design for quality and design for sustainability (i.e., “green engineering”).

You’ll learn how to:

• Ask a client about objectives and translate them into functions and performance specifications
• Construct morphological charts to represent the space of feasible designs
• Develop and compare performance metrics to make design choices
• Apply useful problem-solving and decision-support tools to realistic situations
