About this title

Synopsis

Faith is never chosen lightly. Especially in a divided land. In England's Conversion and Reformation Compared, Robert Manning frames one of the great questions of Christian history as an intimate conversation between a searching young gentleman and his seasoned preceptor. Across four dialogues, they sift the fundamental grounds of the Catholic faith, weigh competing claims of Scripture, tradition, and authority, and test the rival stories England tells about its own past. At once a christian theological dialogue and a lucid guide for choosing a religion, it speaks directly to readers wrestling with conscience amid competing churches and creeds. Composed in early modern England, in the long aftermath of Henry the Eighth and the Stuarts, this catholic apologetics treatise plunges into the historic religious controversy at the heart of the Protestant vs Catholic debate over England's past. Manning patiently compares the nation's first conversion with its later Reformation, asking which bears the marks of continuity, unity, and truth. For students of church history, readers of John Henry Newman theology, and anyone intrigued by 18th century Catholicism, it offers a clear window into a Counter-Reformation Catholic classic shaped by persecution, memory, and hope. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure, ideal for catholic converts study, thoughtful lay readers, and collectors of classic works on England reformation history and early modern England religion.
