Fun, variety, and talk: that's what keeps students alert and thinking, and that's what Dr. Witherspoon gives them. Here they chuckle at idioms and limericks, smile as they correct goofy mistakes in grammar, touch body parts as they sing about them, play word games, read and discuss stories from around the world, and, most importantly, tell their own stories. By these and other means--and especially by talking, talking, talking--they become fluent. That's when the real fun begins!

Mare's milk drew Dr. Witherspoon to the teaching of English, contaminated mare's milk. A colleague in China drank it, got a temperature of 104 F, and temporarily gave her class to him. He loved it! Thus he later took training in ESL and became a leader of teachers in Hungary, Lithuania, and the United States. As the leader, he collected and devised rousing, easily remembered activities to present to his students and fellow teachers. This led to two books: (1) English Comes Alive for Students: Learner's Guide for ESL and EFL, and (2) its companion for teachers, English Comes Alive: Dynamic, Brain-Building Ways to Teach ESL and EFL. Dr. Witherspoon taught biology before English, so his earlier books, audiovisuals, and computer programs are mainly in that field. They include The Living Laboratory (Doubleday), The Functions of Life (Addison-Wesley), Human Physiology (Harper & Row), and From Field to Lab (TAB McGraw-Hill).
