English Landscapes

This is a record of England's regional heritage. The photographer/author team, have collaborated on seven other books on regions of England: "The Cotwolds", "The English Lakes", "The Yorkshire Moors and Dales", "The Heart of England", "The West Country", "Wessex" and "Kent and the Garden of England" (published in 1995). All these are part of the Weidenfeld Country Series. Providing a survey of England's regional heritage, the book aims to convey the atmosphere of an area, and what its defining features are. It explains the manny diversities of culture and scenery of England.

A lengthy working partnership between Talbot and photographer Robin Whiteman has produced a series of books celebrating radiant English scenes. In their latest collaboration, these two discerning guides pool their vast knowledge to cover the country from Lindisfarne Castle in Northumberland to the prehistoric monuments of Land's End, Cornwall. Even as pollution, litter, and real estate development threaten to endanger the natural beauty of England's countryside, there remains a great deal to be admired. Distinguished by rich tapestries of color, Whiteman's landscape photographs record the implied textures of craggy bluffs, moors bedecked in heather, and still, glassy lakes. Talbot's text interweaves the fabric of myth with historical fact to provide appealing narratives that further describe each inviting photographic vignette. Alice Joyce
