English Monasteries (1913)

English Monasteries is a historical and architectural study of monastic life in England, written by Alexander Hamilton Thompson and first published in 1913. The book explores the history and development of monasteries in England, from their origins in the Anglo-Saxon period to their dissolution under Henry VIII in the 16th century. Thompson provides a detailed account of the daily life of monks and nuns, including their religious practices, work, and social organization. He also examines the architecture and design of monastic buildings, from the early wooden structures to the grand stone edifices of the later medieval period. The book includes numerous illustrations and photographs of monastic sites throughout England, as well as detailed maps and plans of individual monasteries. Thompson's writing is scholarly and informative, but also engaging and accessible to a general reader interested in the history of England or the medieval period. Overall, English Monasteries is a comprehensive and valuable resource for anyone interested in the history, architecture, or culture of monastic life in England. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
