About this title

Synopsis

Before novels took over the classroom, readers were trained to speak as well as to think. Read aloud; hear every word. Lindley Murray's The English Reader gathers stirring passages into a prose and poetry anthology made for clarity, taste, and character. Part classic school reader collection and part elocution and reading textbook, it pairs memorable selections with practical guidance on the principles of good reading: pausing, emphasis, and the music of sentences. The aim is simple: clean pronunciation, confident expression, and a trained ear for style. Dip in for an evening's reading, or build a recitation habit. From its roots as a late 18th century schoolbook and its long life in early 19th century literature, Murray's reader shaped generations of English-language instruction on sides of the Atlantic. Murray, famed as a grammarian, also championed the spoken voice. The short pieces are chosen to sharpen judgement and feeling, offering moral instruction short readings grounded in Christian piety and virtue without losing literary variety. Use it for reading aloud practice for youth, for measured pronunciation and expression lessons, or as a homeschool language arts reader alongside rhetoric, grammar, and recitation. Collectors of educational history will recognise it as a McGuffey readers companion and a dependable classical education reader for anyone who values the craft of spoken English. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
