Enki: Guardian of Knowledge: Magic, the Abzu, the Flood, and the Secrets of Ancient Sumer

Discover Enki as the ancient Mesopotamians knew him

Beneath the temples of Eridu lies the Abzu, the hidden freshwater deep associated with Enki—the Sumerian god of wisdom, craft, purification, creation, and sacred knowledge. This book follows his transformation into Ea across Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian traditions, revealing why his presence endured for thousands of years.

Drawing together archaeology, mythology, ritual texts, and religious history, it explores the world that gave Enki meaning: the waters that sustained Mesopotamia, the mysterious powers called the me, Inanna’s acquisition of civilization, the creation of humanity, Adapa, the primordial apkallū sages, and the ritual specialists who invoked Ea’s authority through incantation, purification, diagnosis, and healing.

The journey reaches its dramatic culmination in the Flood, when Ea secretly warns Atrahasis and knowledge becomes the instrument through which human life survives catastrophe.

The final chapters bring these ancient themes into contemporary practice through four carefully distinguished exercises centered on purification, reflective writing, resource organization, and dream observation. From Eridu to the Flood, this is an exploration of a god whose defining power is the ability to transform knowledge into effective action.
