First Illustrated U.S. edition. Square 8vo., orig. brown cloth, bevelled edges, small gilt decoration on the upper board, 63 leave printed on rectos only, 2 blank leaves at rear. With a frontispiece,19 plates and an engraved title. Some offsetting to e/papers, some very minor rubbing to the spine ends but in fact a fine copy. Illustrators are J. La Farge, E. Vedder, W.J. Hennessy, and F.O.C. Darley. The the first English illustrated edition was published in 1866 with illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Seller Inventory # 34319
