Nationalupplaga, 52.) - - - (Baksidestext:) "Våren 1903 präglades Strindbergs äktenskap med Harriet Bosse, hans tredje hustru, av starka slitningar och han såg framför sig en enslig ålderdom. Det är i den situationen han skriver Ensam, en finstämd skildring av den ensamme författarens liv i sekelskiftets Stockholm, hans tankar och hans läsning. Ensam har karaktären av självbiografi med smärre inslag av fiktion. Ett år tidigare, våren 1902, hade Strindberg försatts i 'nya stämningar' genom dottern Anne-Maries födelse. Detta ledde bl.a. till att han sommaren 1903 skrev Sagor. Även om dessa berättelser i första hand riktar sig till vuxna och ibland har novellistisk prägel anknyter de båda till den traditionella barnsagan och den fantastiska sagan. Bland Strindbergs sagor märks Ett halvt ark papper, ett mästerstycke av episk koncentration, och den fängslande barnsagan Blåvinge finner Guldpudran. Här finns också den H. C. Andersen-influerade sagan om pianot på havsbotten, Stora Grusharpan, liksom den gripande berättelsen om fången på Långholmen, När träsvalan kom i Getapeln och en rad andra sagor. Dessutom innehåller denna volym ett par berättelser som Strindberg publicerade separat: Pintorpa-fruns Julafton, en äktenskapsskildring som ursprungligen ingick i sagosamlingen, och den humoristiska Anden i flaskan.
