How Do You Enter a Room? (Hardback or Cased Book)

There are so many ways to enter a room―which one suits you?

In this playful and perceptive picture book, readers explore the wonderfully diverse ways people navigate social situations. Do you burst through doors with a smile, ready to chat with everyone? Or do you slip in quietly, preferring to observe? Maybe you head straight for the snacks, or pause dramatically to make an entrance?

Through rhyming, engaging verse, How Do You Enter a Room? celebrates all the different ways kids feel in social situations―from the exuberantly outgoing to the thoughtfully reserved, and everyone in between. Each approach is presented with humor and respect, showing children that there's no one way to be social.

Perfect for:

• Starting conversations about feelings, anxiety, and self-acceptance in homes and classrooms
• Supporting neurodivergent children and those with social anxiety
• Fans of the neuro-affirming empathy of Jenn Bailey’s A Friend for Henry and the social-emotional resonance of Trudy Ludwig’s The Invisible Boy
• School counselors, therapists, and educators building inclusive SEL curriculum

A warm and witty celebration that helps build emotional intelligence and social awareness, this inclusive story helps children recognize and respect the many ways people experience the world around them.

Madeline Harris Chan thinks a lot. She thinks and thinks, and when the thinking threatens to overwhelm, sometimes she writes – which is often just thinking on paper. Madeline loves exploring how our unique and evolving personalities and circumstances impact the ways we navigate the world, find joy, and experience wonder. She is grateful to live with her husband and three small children in Vancouver, Canada, on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.
