Braasch, Gary
Reviews:
The stunning images in these two volumes are as breathtakingly beautiful as modern techniques and the artistry of the photographer can make them. Both focus on a natural world that is being altered or destroyed by human intervention. Vanishing Paradise tells the now-familiar story of the rain forest, subject of several other books with spectacular photographs (e.g., John Nichol's The Mighty Rain Forest, LJ 6/15/90). However, this volume by two English nature photographers and Earthwatch deputy director Mitchell emphasizes the fauna of the forest. The chapter on camouflage, showing how mammals, birds, and insects conceal themselves in their habitat, is especially striking. Entering the Grove covers the forests along the west and east coasts of North America, adding a few photographs taken in Costa Rica. The pictures by magazine photographer Braasch should have been left to tell their own poignant story; the stream-of-consciousness text, by nature writer Stafford ( Having Everything Right: Essays of Place , Penguin, 1987), does not relate well to the photos and lessens their impact. Both of these beautiful coffee-table books are well worth having if the library budget allows.
