Nonprofits provide valuable help and enrichment to the individuals they serve. Like any other organization, nonprofits are subject to an ever-increasing number of risks. This book can best be described as a practical and concise “how to” guide for nonprofits which want to recognize and limit the effect of risk on their operations and increase their chance for success and survival. This book is for the board of directors, executive directors, staff and volunteers of such organizations as well as students of philanthropy. This book covers: 1) many of the most common strategic and operational risks to nonprofits today, 2) examples of what has happened to organizations which ignore the risks facing them, 3) how to identify, prioritize and mitigate nonprofit risk, 4) possible mitigation strategies for a representative sampling of risks, and 5) tips on how to approach insurance as part of risk mitigation. Also included are a sample risk manual that nonprofits can use in launching an enterprise risk management process and myriad other sample tools for managing risk.
About the Authors
Al Decker is a recognized authority on enterprise risk management (ERM), information security and privacy, and internal controls. He has more than 30 years of professional experience in private industry and public accounting. A former worldwide executive for security and privacy services at IBM, he has also been executive director of enterprise risk management at Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and the national partner-in-charge of IT security services and national director of IT assurance services at Coopers & Lybrand, LLP (now PWC). Al holds an MBA from Rutgers University and a BA from William Paterson University.
Donna Galer began her career in financial services with Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase). Then, after almost a decade at Crum and Forster Insurance Company, she joined Zurich Insurance. At Zurich, she held a number of executive positions including Regional Manager for Zurich North America based in Zurich, Switzerland and Chief Administrative Officer for world-wide general insurance based in New York. She has served on the boards of a number of insurance and community non-profit organizations and has published extensively on risk management, strategy and insurance. She was recognized as one of the "Top 100 Women in Insurance" by Business Insurance in 2000. Ms. Galer holds an MA from Rutgers University and a BA from Wagner College in addition to having attended executive education classes at Northwestern's Kellogg School and IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland.
