He received his Ph.D. in organismic and evolutionary biology from Harvard University and serves as the executive director of the Mpala Research Center and a research scholar through Princeton University's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department. He lives and works in Kenya, where he chairs the Insect Committee of Nature Kenya.
