About the Author
David Binns currently serves as Associate Director of the Beyster Institute at the Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego. A published author and frequent speaker on issues related to employee ownership and enterprise development, he has consulted with a variety of companies, both domestic and international, on the legal, financial and human resource implications of the structure and implementation of employee ownership plans. He has also been actively involved in efforts to promote the use of employee ownership as a means to facilitate privatization, defense conversion and economic development in several foreign countries. From 1984 to 1991 Mr. Binns served as Executive Director of The ESOP Association, the national trade association representing the interests of companies with employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) and professionals providing advisory services to ESOP companies. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia. Martin Staubus is Director of Consulting for the Beyster Institute at the Rady School. He has over twenty years of experience in employee ownership, human resources, law and organizational development. Trained as an attorney, Mr. Staubus has experience as a practicing lawyer, consultant and corporate VP of human resources. His work includes service as an employee ownership attorney, policy advisor and speechwriter for Labor Secretary Robert Reich, legal advisor to the California State Labor Relations Board, and deputy director of the ESOP Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Employee Ownership. Martin holds a B.A. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.B.A. in organizational development from the George Washington University, Washington DC, and a law degree from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, CA. Ron Bernstein is Associate Director and CFO of the Beyster Institute at the Rady School. He has counseled hundreds of companies in all stages of development on structuring employee ownership programs. Through his leadership of the Institute's conferences, seminars and consultations, Bernstein has gained a national reputation as an authority on employee ownership and associated human relations areas of participative management, improved workplace performance and incentive systems. Bernstein has also played an active role in promoting employee ownership in the privatization process in Russia, Venezuela and other emerging countries. Bernstein previously worked for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) as Manager of SAIC's retirement programs. Bernstein holds a B.A. in accounting from Michigan State University and a Masters in taxation from Golden State University.
