Environmental Change and Challenge: A Canadian Perspective , Third Edition, is an introduction to the rich, fascinating, and extremely topical field of environmental studies. Well-known and respected geographers Philip Dearden and Bruce Mitchell ground readers in the basic science of ecosystems so that they may knowledgeably explore a host of contemporary environmental issues, such as climate change, oceans and fisheries, forests, agriculture, water, minerals and energy, and endangered species and protected areas.

Throughout, the authors emphasize the interrelationship between human actions and environmental change and bring their field and policy experience to bear on topics with both Canadian and international relevance. The third edition of Environmental Change and Challenge also addresses the philosophies and methods behind planning and management, including management of increasingly stressed urban environments, and concludes with concrete steps for developing solutions for a planet facing complex and ever-changing environmental challenges.

Philip Dearden is a widely published and prominent geographer who chairs the University of Victoria's Department of Geography. There, he is also currently the Leader of the Marine Protection Area Working Group of the Ocean Management Research Network and serves as Co-Chair of Parks Canada's NMCA Science Advisory Network. His principle interest is conservation and his research focus is on protected areas, particularly those in Canada and southeast Asia. Professor Dearden includes OUP Canada's first two editions of Environmental Change and Challenge as well as Parks and Protected Areas in Canada (with Rick Rollins) among his more than 160 published books, articles, and monographs.

Bruce Mitchell is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo, where he also serves as Associate Provost, Academic and Student Affairs. His work is oriented towards planning and management, particularly integrated water management; indeed, he is currently working on the fourth edition of his OUP Canada title, Resource and Environmental Management in Canada. Professor Mitchell has published more than 130 articles and 25 books and was honoured in 2005 with entrance as Fellow into both the Royal Society of Canada and the International Water Resources Association.
