Environmental Problems in Eastern Europe.

Environmental problems are now issues of international concern. The problems derive to some extent from the pre-socialist phase of development and are exacerbated by trans-boundary pollution. But the main problems derive from four decades of central planning. The countries of Eastern Europe now face the critical challenge of cleaning up their environment to attract Western investment.

In Environmental Problems in Eastern Europe, experts on the region present a range of case studies of Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and the former Yugoslavia. They describe and analyze the major causes and consequences of air, water, soil and vegetation pollution, and give particular emphasis to the effects on the peoples of Eastern Europe and the environmental quality of life. The book includes insights into the literature available on environmental issues within the region.
