Item description from seller
Spiral. (Jazz Publications). Epitaph, written for a 31-piece ensemble, was the masterwork of composer/bassist Charles Mingus. The extended suite is comprised of multiple movements reflecting a wealth of compositional styles (not just jazz) that demonstrate Mingus' invaluable contribution to 20th-century American music. Since its last performance 15 years ago, additional movements have been discovered that were originally intended to be a part of the work. This unique 500-page score includes these missing movements along with historical and program notes. Prepared and edited under the guidance of Gunther Schuller and Sue Mingus, it provides a monumental resource for study and analysis. The first jazz composition of such magnitude ever to be published, it is presented in this edition as he left it: a summary work, a portrait for all time of his life in music. I wrote it for my tombstone. - Charles Mingus Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability. …

Charles Mingus Epitaph (Complete - Full Score) presents one of the most ambitious large ensemble compositions in twentieth-century American music. Written by composer and bassist Charles Mingus for a 31-piece jazz ensemble, this monumental extended suite brings together jazz traditions and a wide range of compositional styles. This complete full score offers conductors, composers, music educators, and researchers a detailed resource for exploring Mingus's musical vision.
The publication includes the complete full score, featuring multiple movements and rediscovered sections originally intended for Epitaph. Historical and program notes provide context for the composition and its development. Prepared and edited under the guidance of Gunther Schuller and Sue Mingus, the edition preserves the breadth of Mingus's writing for large ensemble. At Level 4, the work provides extensive material for detailed score examination and ensemble interpretation.
Studying Epitaph reveals how Mingus combined orchestral textures, rhythmic contrasts, thematic development, and jazz expression within a large-scale musical structure. The full score supports score reading, compositional analysis, ensemble interpretation, and preparation for performance. Its combination of musical notation and historical commentary also makes it a meaningful reference for teaching and exploring American jazz composition.
More than a collection of sheet music, Epitaph documents a defining artistic statement from Charles Mingus. Whether used for musical study, rehearsal preparation, performance research, or as a thoughtful gift for a jazz enthusiast, this edition offers a lasting connection to the composer's creative legacy and the expressive possibilities of large ensemble music.
