Erasmus His Life And Character As Shown In His Correspondence And Works: By Robert Blackley Drummond. With Portrait. This two-volume biographical study surveys Erasmus of Rotterdam through his life, letters, and published works, tracing his role at the crossroads of the Reformation and the Catholic Church. Drawing on Erasmus's correspondence and writings, the author analyzes his relations with Luther, the papacy, and the Reformers; his moderation, satire, and scholarly zeal; and his unique position between humanist learning and religious faith. The narrative follows Erasmus from Erfurt and Basel to Louvain and Freiburg, detailing his patrons, his editions of patristic authors, his controversial Colloquies, and his exchanges with figures such as Hutten, Bedda, Berquin, and Adrian VI. The work portrays a scholar who combined wit, humane piety, and a lifelong commitment to liberty of thought and learning, while seeking reform within the Church rather than its rupture. It remains a critical historical-biographical account of Erasmus's life and influence.
