Ergodic Theory of Numbers (Carus Mathematical Monographs)

This book is an introduction to the ergodic theory behind common number expansions, for instance decimal expansions, continued fractions and many others. The questions studied are dynamical as well as number theoretic in nature, and the answers are obtained with the help of ergodic theory. What it means to be ergodic and the basic ideas behind ergodic theory are explained along the way. The book is aimed at introducing students with sufficient background knowledge in real analysis to a 'dynamical way of thinking'. The subjects covered vary from the classical to recent research which should increase the appeal of this book to researchers working in the field.

Karma Dajani began her study of mathematics at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. She earned her PhD from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Before accepting her current position at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, Dajani served as Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama in Mobile and Visiting Professor at Université de Provence (CMI), Château-Gombert in Marseille, France. Dajani has twice won the James Taylor Mathematics Prize from George Washington University.

Cor Kraaikamp studied mathematics at the Universiteit van Amsterdam where he earned his PhD. He spent a year as a post-doc in the United States at the University of Maryland in College Park and the University of Washington in Seattle until he was appointed Professor at Delft in the Netherlands. Kraiikamp has served as Visiting Professor at the Université de Provence, St. Charles in Marseille, the Université de la Méditerranée in Marseille, and Tsuda College in Tokyo. He was also elected lecturer-of-the-year by his math students in Delft in 2000.
