Unfortunately, her idyllic lifestyle is interrupted by the arrival of her very ill mother from Guarda in the Three Leagues. Should Elena return home home to help manage family affairs and look after her younger siblings? She faces an impossible choice- leave her happy life in Grantville, or turn her back on her family in distant Guarda?

Please note: The following story contains adult content.
"No One Stands Alone" By Brad Banner and Bobbie Banner - Nothing has ever been easy for young Geri Kinney, she has survived horrific domestic violence, betrayed again and again by people she should have been able to trust. The years of abuse have left behind deep emotional scars. At long last she finds the strength to break free from the past with the aid of loving friends who become her true family, good people who don't judge and shower her with love- but Geri is so badly broken, the question becomes: will her newfound happiness last?

"Netanel And Sarah’s Story" By Natalie Silk - Driven from their home by high rent and a poor economy, this small family braves the harsh realities of life on the road as they travel in caravans with other migrants in search of a better life. Their destination is Jena in the USE, a safe haven and beacon of hope in a dangerous world, if they can survive the challenges of their arduous journey.

"It Was Just A Joke!" By Tim Sayeau - Eleven years old Christopher has been summoned to the principal's office along with his less than pleased parents, ostensibly for starting a food fight. As the boy's tale unfurls we find that the real culprit is a rift between uptime and downtime cultures: a light jest in one is taken for blasphemy in the other!

"Out of the Frying Pan, into the Friar" By Todd S. Jones - Friar Thomas Wolf of the Order of Friars Minor is on his way too Freiburg when he finds himself swept up in the terrors of war. Along the way he finds himself thrust into playing the role of hero as he must rescue a woman from mysterious Grantville who has been captured by mercenary scoundrels. Together they risk all in a mad chase across the war torn countryside in a mad bid to reach the safety that lies behind the Ring of Fire.
