A very good copy. $500. * Only edition. Written by Ernst Immanuel Bekker, a titan of Roman law and a distinguished professor at the University of Heidelberg, Ernst and Scherz was published as a tribute to Rudolf von Jhering [1818-1892]. Jhering was the pioneering scholar of sociological jurisprudence and has been described by legal historians as the "Mark Twain of German jurisprudence". This "Festgabe" (tribute) commemorates his Doctorjubilaum, an honor bestowed upon an academic who has held a doctorate for 50 years. Bekker explores the core tenets of Jhering's work and assesses their lasting significance. The title is a clever inversion of Jhering's own Scherz und Ernst in der Jurisprudenz [Humor and Seriousness in Jurisprudence] (1884), a landmark work of legal satire that employed irony to dismantle legal formalism. OCLC locates 9 copies in North American law libraries (Columbia, Duke, Harvard, Louisiana State University, UC Berkeley, UC-Davis, University of Michigan, Tulane, Yale).…
