This book offers an account of ten crucial moments in the history of ideas, which represent ten key moments of the discovery of pluralism. From the Indian emperor Ashoka to Origen and from Nicola Cusano to Las Casas, Montaigne, Lessing, giants who opened the way to the thought of tolerance, challenging the dogma of a unique truth dictated by authority, followed in this reconstruction by other glowing thinkers of the twentieth century, such as Horace Kallen, Margaret Mead, and Jacques Dupuis. These protagonists, each in their own way, battled against monism for the respect of differences and for the knowledge of otherness. This kind of hall of fame of pluralist thinkers ends with the most important figure of the pluralism of values, Isaiah Berlin, of whom an unpublished interview appears here for the first time in English. It is of great value and interest to scholars and students of theoretical, moral, political philosophy, sociology, comparative studies, comparative literature, religious diversity, religious studies, anthropology, and all those interested in the history of tolerance.…

The summer of 1966 in America is a time of rock and roll, political unrest, and the constant stress of the devastating conflict in Vietnam. Erwin “Erv” Krause is fresh out of college and facing graduate school enrollment. With the endless responsibility of real adult life just around the corner, Erv knows now may be his last chance to satisfy the deep desire for adventure that’s been burning inside him since childhood.
Erv’s good friend Paddy is in the final stages of a troubled marriage that’s ending all too soon. Seeing his friend mired in life’s muck, Erv rouses the adventurous spirit in Paddy as well. Soon enough the plan is set, and the two friends embark on a cross-country road trip on their beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
From his time as a travel-loving youth in the cozy College Point neighborhood of Queens to his obsession with motorcycles as a teen, Escape from the USA is Erv Krause’s recollection of the unavoidable lure of adventure that leads him and Paddy on an unforgettable road trip that embodies the spirit of youth.
