An Essay On The Bite A Mad Dog: In Which The Claim To Infallibility Of The Principal Preservative Remedies Against The Hydrophobia Is Examined by John Berkenhout. This historical medical treatise surveys canine madness and hydrophobia, arguing that the disease produced by the bite is a disorder of deglutition and respiration, and that “hydrophobia” is not merely a fear of water. Berkenhout reviews the range of authorities from Hippocrates to Morgagni, Boerhaave, Mead, Cullen, and James, noting that many longstanding classifications of the disease are misapplied and that deaths occur despite various supposed cures. The work details the progression of the disease in dogs and in humans, the typical diagnostic signs, and the impracticality of relying on so?called infallible remedies such as Mithridates, Theriaca, tonics, or tonquin musk. He condemns sea-bathing and other prophylactics, and argues that the only rational prevention involves prompt wound care and palliative support, particularly mercurial treatment, topical ointments, and conservative measures rather than drastic cauterizations. The essay closes with practical guidance for patient care and critique of medical fashion.
