The author argues that the excessive taxes and duties placed on trade and goods were to blame. He says these taxes inflate the prices of British products making it difficult to sell British goods abroad. At the same time, the British government's heavy reliance on these taxes discourages more efficient tax collection, leading to waste and a further increase in taxes. The author also argues that the taxes create incentives for smuggling and other illegal activities. The author's insights into how government policy and taxation can affect the economy are still relevant today.
