An Essay On The Origin And Operation Of The Dry Rot: With A View To It's Prevention Or Cure. To Which Are Annexed, Suggestions On The Cultivation Of Forest Trees, And An Abstract Of The Several Forest Laws, From The Reign Of Canute To The Present Time by Robert McWilliam. This work is a comprehensive early 19th?century treatise examining the dry rot that degrades timber, and offering a wide range of prevention and cure strategies. It analyzes the disease as a cryptogamic decay arising from fungi, air, heat, and moisture, and traces its origins in timber, walls, and foundations. The volume integrates detailed investigations into the anatomy and chemistry of oak and fir, the roles of fungi and worms, and the effects of atmospheric conditions and water. It additionally surveys methods for preserving timber through seasoning, charring, impregnation with oils or mineral compounds, and careful architectural design to improve ventilation and drainage. Beyond the technical discussion of rot, the book champions forest cultivation, timber policy, and historic forest laws from Canute onward, including appendices on timber resources and national planting strategies, reflecting an era focused on national timber security and naval strength.
