Flaherty and issued for the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History as the second of two companion volumes. Most of the essays deal with Ontario and its predecessor, Upper Canada. They cover the work of the civil courts there and the later development of the Ontario court system. A long study looks at the Law Society of Upper Canada as an educator of lawyers from 1785 to 1889. Other essays treat political corruption, rape law in the nineteenth century, and the Toronto Police Court. Two more look at the conflict between private rights and public purposes on Ontario's waterways and at how workers' compensation began in the province. Beyond Ontario, one essay examines the Kamloops outlaws and the commissions of assize in nineteenth-century British Columbia.…
