This instructionally oriented, laboratory-based book successfully integrates theory and skills for counselors-in-training, providing them with a solid foundation. It presents a comprehensive overview of the counseling process from a practical and skilled-based point of view, emphasizing communication between counselor and client and ways to assess counseling effectiveness. In writing this book, Doyle felt that the available texts did not spend enough time on the counseling process nor on communication skills, and he believes a firm understanding of both is crucial for student learning. He has organized this valuable resource book into three major sections: Part One provides a theoretical understanding of several essential concepts related to the dynamics of the counseling process; Part Two outlines a number of intervention strategies; and Part Three describes and amply illustrates the critical communication skills required for effective helping.

Dr. Doyle has been working in the field of counseling more than thirty years and teaching counseling courses for twenty-five of those years. He is a professor of Counselor Education at St. John's University in Jamaica, New York. His doctorate degree was earned at New York University. He has been an active member and has held positions of leadership in professional counseling associations such as APA, ACD, ARVIC, and ACES.
