Essentials of Oceanography was originally written to provide for the needs of general oceanography courses in quarter-system colleges and community colleges. It contained 18 chapters containing the topics usually covered in such a course.
Because the previous editions were well received, we have made a few major organizational changes for the third edition. We have clarified the content wherever possible to help the reader. Another of our primary objectives has been to keep the book as up-to-date as possible. With these objectives in mind, we have also redrawn a number of line drawings. The color inserts have been expanded, with the plates arrange in four central themes: an introductory overview, marine geology, physical oceanography, and marine biology.
