About this Item
A collection of two novels by Pansy. In two volumes. The set consists of Ester Ried, Asleep and Awake and Little Fishers and Their Nets. Isabella Macdonald Alden (November 3, 1841 August 5, 1930) was an American author, writing under the pseudonym of Pansy. From 1865 to 1929, Alden authored about 100 books. Most of her works are didactic fiction, heavily salted with religious principles, which concentrate on translating Biblical precepts into acceptable Christian behavior in a modern world. Several of her books, such as her most popular work Ester Ried, were based on personal experiences; others, such as the Chautauqua Girls series, were motivated by her interest in the Chautauqua movement. She and her niece, Grace Livingston Hill, even make a brief appearance in the final chapter of the last book in the series, Four Mothers at Chatauqua. Alden's books were enormously popular during the late nineteenth century; in 1900, sales were estimated at around 100,000 copies annually. Some titles like Esther Ried were translated into several languages, including French, German, Russian and Japanese. In green cloth bindings with gilt lettering to the front boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Spines are cocked. Spine on Little Fishers and Their Nets is also sunned. There is some staining to the boards on Ester Ried, Asleep and Awake. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Pages are browned due to age. There is an ink inscription to the front pastedown on both volumes, dated 1907. Good Only.
