The Etymological Compendium, Or, Portfolio of Origins and Inventions . Containing a Particular Account of London and Its Public Buildings

The Etymological Compendium, Or, Portfolio Of Origins And Inventions. Containing A Particular Account Of London And Its Public Buildings by William Pulleyn. This densely packed reference surveys origins and inventions across language, literature, architecture, art, government, and related fields, collecting overlooked etymologies and anecdotal notes into a compact guide that educates and amuses. Core themes include how language evolves from imitative sounds to the parts of speech; Britain's tongue as a mosaic shaped by Gaul/Latin, with Roman, Saxon, Danish, and Norman influences. It treats government as a natural social instrument tempered by law and humane policing; it traces the rise of books, manuscripts, and printing from early materials to writing formats, Caxton and Gutenberg, dedications, authorship, circulating libraries, and the early book trade. It covers architecture and the arts, the five classical orders, and artifacts such as the Portland Vase; notes on sign painting, heraldry, and royal pageantry; and the spread of notational systems and newspapers. The work functions as a reference that blends etymology, anecdote, and cultural history.
