Eulogy on Samuel Mcclellan, M.D

Eulogy On Samuel Mcclellan, M.D by Thomas Windeatt Blatchford. This commemorative address, prepared by order of the Medical Society of the State of New-York and read at the annual meeting in Albany on February 3, 1857, offers a detailed biographical sketch of Dr. Samuel McClellan. Blatchford traces McClellan’s life from his 1787 birth in Coleraine, Massachusetts, through his early education near his father’s farm, to his medical training with his brother and early practice in Schodack and Hudson. The essay highlights his skill as a practitioner and teacher, his devotion to patients, his cheerful temperament, and his firm adherence to rational medical practice. It also recounts anecdotes illustrating his courage and humanity, his leadership in the profession, his church involvement, and his role in reform movements such as temperance. The eulogy concludes with reflections on his battle with cancer, his Christian faith, and the lasting impact of his life on medicine and community life.
