About this Item
The Europe of The Capitals 1600 - 1700, part of the Art. Ideas. History series, by Giulio Carlo Argan; Skira, Geneva, 1964. The 64 colour plates that are tipped-in were engraved by Guezelle & Renouard, Paris; the black and white plates, many fold-out, by Imprimeries Reunies, Lausanne; and the text Printed on the presses of Editions D Art Albert Skira 15 October 1964. Frpom the blurb It was in the seventeenth century that modern Europe took form as a system of nation-states in quest of political and economic equilibrium. It was this age of absolute monarchy that saw the decline of the great feudal nobility and the rise of the commercial and industrial bourgeoisie; the capital city, as we know it today. The use of images is a particularly effective means of persuasion, of communication, and the immense increase in the production of images in the seventeenth century shows that logic was no longer regarded as the decisive means of influencing human actions. Thus, it is in the visual arts that we find a clear reflection of the thoughts and actions of the Baroque age. Giulio Carlo Argan (1909 1992) was an Italian art historian and politician, and the time of this book s publication he was a Professor at the University of Rome. This oversized book, 222 pages measuring 300mm X 235mm, is in fine condition, in a near fine dust jacket in a very good slip-case. A typical Skira, superbly produced art book that in itself is a work of art. This heavy book and oversized book will require extra postage. Seller Inventory # 18103a
