Print on Demand. This book examines European spiders in meticulous detail, traveling back to the dawn of arachnology as a field of scientific study. From 1757 onward, the species, families, and genera of spiders have been painstakingly defined and delineated, but a significant proportion of these historical descriptions lack the precision necessary for the easy identification of species. To amend this, the author provides thoroughly updated and accurate descriptions for a large number of European spider species. They painstakingly lay out the distinguishing characteristics needed for proper identification, including the configuration of spinnerets, cephalothorax, abdomen, legs, claws, and other elements. The book also features a list of all known works on European spiders, from the earliest studies to the present day. This book will be of value to both new and experienced arachnologists who are interested in the variety of spiders found across Europe. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A scholarly guide to European spiders and the names that identify them, with careful notes on how nomenclature should work.
This edition presents a thorough review of European spider genera, preceded by observations on zoological naming. It blends historical discussion with a practical approach to fixing synonymous names, choosing authoritative references, and applying established nomenclature rules. The work situates its comments in relation to earlier major texts and shows how names have shifted as classifications evolved.
The author blends personal expertise with a broad survey of European arachnology, drawing on Swedish collections and collaborations with other researchers. It also discusses how to treat genera and species when names have been used inconsistently, offering methods for clear and stable usage. A plate accompanies the analysis, illustrating key points of the discussion.
- Explanations of how to preserve genus and species names when new information emerges
- Cross‑references to major works by Westring, Blackwall, Simon, and others
- Detailed notes on several prominent genera, including methods for delimiting groups and understanding their relationships
- Guidance on applying nomenclature rules to ensure consistent, lasting terminology
Ideal for readers of arachnology, taxonomy, and the history of zoological naming who seek a solid reference on European spiders and their proper designations.
