Taking the major issues of democracy as its starting point, this
informative volume offers a wide-ranging review of democracy in
the European union. It treats the union as a new type of political
system within the tradition of parliamentary democracies, a system
that is neither federal nor intergovernmental, which has unique
problems of how to handle democratic requirements. In The European
Union: How Democratic Is It? contributors deal with many of the
major challenges of interest such as political parties, lobbying,
and how democracy becomes the key element in the linkage between
the the European Union and its member states. They also address
the democratic aspects of key European Union institutions: The
European Council, the European Commission, and the European
Parliament.
Offering a broad discussion of the European Union, this timely
volume will be of special interest to students and professionals
in the fields of politics and public administration.
