Synopsis
Volume 2: Petrarch to Renaissance Short Fiction
From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-These 68 essays about the authors and themes most studied by today's college undergrads and high school students have been culled from the 14-volume definitive compendium of "European Writers" (Scribners). Essays average 26 pages of biography and criticism written in an entertaining and scholarly style. Among the authors covered are Mann, Garcia Lorca, Brecht, Andersen, Balzac, Freud, Grass, de Beauvoir, Colette, and Sand. The inclusion of information on the Arthurian legend, medieval drama and satire, Norse sagas, and the Renaissance makes this almost a short course in comparative literature-and, since the essays are excellent reading, a most palatable one. At the end of each signed entry is a selected bibliography of editions of works in the author's native language, available translations, and other biographical and critical studies. This set's readability, scholarship, and curriculum orientation recommend it for purchase by all high schools and colleges, as well as public libraries that do not have the original.
