Gr 5-8-Two serviceable introductory overviews for young adolescents considering a dietary switch. Both titles examine the reasons for becoming vegetarian/vegan, including health concerns and ethical/religious positions, and proceed to dispel common myths attached to these lifestyles. The authors identify celebrities who are vegetarians and vegans and address issues that young people may face when dealing with social situations, family relationships, and special occasions. The books are attractive, with black-and-white and full-color photos throughout. A handful of recipes are appended to each volume. Weiss's book is the more strident of the two, with an "expos " look at modern farming practices. Judy Krizmanic's A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian (Puffin, 1994) and Jan Parr's The Young Vegetarian's Companion (Watts, 1996) cover the same territory in greater depth, more closely approaching the promised "everything you need to know."-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS
