Set in late 19th-century England, the novel explores themes of social mobility, the constraints of class, and the complexities of personal relationships.The personal copy of celebrated English science fiction author Brian Aldiss, best known for his 'Helliconia' trilogy.Loosely inserted is a provenance notice signed by the executor of Aldiss's estate, his daughter Wendy.To the front pastedown is the bookplate of Martin Seymour-Smith, who has inscribed the work to Aldiss.Crossed out inscription to front free endpaper. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely. Light shelf wear to spine tail. Bookplate to front pastedown, inscription to head of front free endpaper. Dust wrapper front wrap detached from back strip. Significant loss to back strip head and centre of back strip. Wrap perimeters age toned, with marks to front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned due to paper type, but clean. Very Good Indeed.
