Evolution of Animals (Classic Reprint)

Explore how animal markings evolved, from rosettes and dapples to rings and mobility-driven color changes, with clear, illustrated explanations you can trust.

This edition presents a wide-ranging look at the origins and meaning of mammal coloration. Drawing on extensive observations and photographs, it offers a practical view of why spots, stripes, and color contrasts appear and persist. The book connects markings to movement, armor loss, and the needs of life in changing environments, making complex ideas accessible to general readers and students alike.

You’ll encounter concrete cases—from horses and big cats to marsupials and beyond—that illustrate how pigmentation patterns may arise, shift, or vanish over time. The author treats anatomy, behavior, and evolution in a way that helps readers appreciate how visible traits can reflect deeper biological processes.

• Clear explanations of why certain body parts show quicker color changes than others.
• Insight into the idea that some markings are vestiges of ancestral patterns.
• Illustrative examples across a range of mammals, with attention to both body color and limb markings.
• Discussion of the role of natural selection and other factors in shaping appearance.

Ideal for readers of evolutionary biology, natural history, and animal science who want a grounded, illustrated introduction to how animal markings arise and what they may signify.
