The Expendables

A chilling vision of engineered humanity and institutional sacrifice from one of science fiction's most provocative imaginations.

In The Expendables, A. E. van Vogt explores a future in which specially bred humans-immune to radiation and capable of surviving the deadliest environments-are created for a singular purpose: to serve and, if necessary, to be sacrificed. As civilization rebuilds amid the ruins of atomic devastation, these altered men exist at the margins of society, valued for their utility yet denied full humanity.

Van Vogt's narrative combines high-concept speculation with psychological tension, examining what happens when those designed to endure begin to question the terms of their existence. Written during the anxious dawn of the atomic age, the story reflects both technological optimism and profound moral unease. The Expendables stands as a stark meditation on power, control, and the ethics of survival in a transformed world.
